Movies!

The Alien Saga
This was a very interesting documentary about the Alien movie franchise. I particularly enjoyed the portion where everyone connected to the Alien films mentioned what a terrible idea Alien vs. Predator would be for a film. Sorry guys!

Letters From Iwo Jima
The stories of Japanese soldiers who unsuccessfully defended the island of Iwo Jima. Now, I will occasionally comment that something made me misty. This movie made me cry. Flat out cry. It was ten times better than Flags of Our Fathers. It was beautifully scored, well acted, and incredibly moving.

Mmm, movies.

I'm looking forward to Letters, but I have a question.

When watching the trailer, I noted (with my bastard Japanese) that the translations were sometimes... really off. Like, the sentiment was the same, but they used totally different words. Like (and this is a totally made up example) "We will defend this place with our blood and bones" would be subtitled "Our deaths will be the bulwark to stop the enemy advance." Was it that way in the movie?

Mmm, I feel like a geek, me and my pidgin Japanese.

They were not identical. But the subtitles and the script were written at the same time. I think that the intent was to make it culturally adaptable. Japanese literal translations are usually perplexing and full of double negatives and half finished sentences.
They changed a lot of the colloquialisms and curse words (I noticed this sort of thing much more). Sometimes they would say literally ‘shit’ but it would be translated to ‘damn.’ I’m not sure whether this was to influence rating or to show the lack of severity of the term.
There were also some Imperial catch phrases that were not translated straight across, probably because while every Japanese person would know what they meant, everyone else would not understand the significance of the phrases.

since I've been prodded into typing out my inane babble, I'll just say this.

1. They made a documentary about a movie franchise?
2. They made it about the ALIEN franchise?
3. Why haven't I seen this?

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Because you are inferior to me.
