You Better Work

Today I read this great article that postulated a new and exciting theory as to why our mainstream kids are falling behind: they're lazy bastards.
I couldn't agree more.

My husband is teaching a large history seminar course at a major public university. He had a student come to office hours asking for help with the review questions for a test. One question had to do with geographical influences on early civilizations.

The student could not name ONE geographical factor that might influence the development of a civilization, except after being led by the hand through a series of questions.

Teacher's side of the conversation:
"Okay, let's pick a civilization as an example. Name one. ... Oookay, how about Egypt? What was Egypt like? ... Right, a desert. Now how does a civilization develop in a desert? ... Yes, they have to trade, but what do they have to do before they can trade? ... How do they grow food in a desert? ... There's no water or soil in a desert, so how do they grow food? ..."

It took that much to get the student to name "rivers" as a geographical factor! And this is in COLLEGE!!
